The Missed-Call Fix

Google Local Services Ads missed-call charges: what Google's help says

Disclosure: we wrote and sell a guide on this.

If you run Google Local Services Ads (LSA), you may now be paying for some calls you never answered. Google's "How leads work" help page lists this as a valid lead: "You missed a phone call during your business hours and the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds." Search Engine Land reported the change started October 1, 2026. Here's what Google's help pages say, in plain English, and what to check in your account. (Checked Oct 20, 2026. Google can change these pages, so check them yourself before you act.)

How Local Services Ads charges for leads

Google's help says: "With Local Services Ads, you pay for valid leads." Lead prices "may vary depending on your location, the job type, the type of lead, or your bidding mode." Per the same page, a valid lead can come from:

When a missed call can be charged: the 20-second rule

Repeat calls: the 15-day rule

Google's help: "Once a lead is charged, any follow-up calls or messages with that customer are not charged again, provided there is interaction within 15 days and the contact comes from the same phone number or email address." If 15 days pass with no activity, a new call or message from that customer creates a new lead, which is charged if it meets the valid-lead criteria. If you miss a short call (under 20 seconds) and the customer calls back, Google evaluates the follow-up call as an answered call.

Charge Status, credits and the feedback survey

What to check this week

  1. Your Google Business Profile hours. They define "business hours" for these charges, so make sure they match when someone can actually answer.
  2. Your ad schedule, if you use one: unanswered calls are only charged inside both your schedule and your business hours.
  3. The Charge Status column on your Leads page, for any charged call you never spoke to.
  4. Rate poor leads with the feedback survey.
  5. How many calls you actually miss. If your phone system exports a call log, the free Lead Leak Report shows when calls go unanswered and how fast they get called back. Your call log stays on your device. No export? Count a week by hand with the 1-page worksheet.

Where a text-back fits

If you're paying for those calls, a text-back can reply to missed callers by text instead of leaving them at a dead voicemail. It doesn't change your LSA settings or what Google charges. You still make the callback.

FAQ

Does Google charge for missed calls on Local Services Ads?

Some of them. Google's help lists a missed call during your business hours as a valid lead when the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Search Engine Land reported it started October 1, 2026.

Does a call that goes to voicemail count?

Yes, during business hours. Google treats voicemail or an automated greeting as a connected call, charged if the caller stays on for more than 20 seconds, "whether or not they leave a message."

If I answer after 20 seconds of ringing, am I charged for the ring time?

No. Per Google, the 20-second rule applies only to unanswered calls. An answered call is evaluated on the conversation.

Will the same customer be charged twice?

Not within 15 days, per Google, if there's interaction within 15 days and the contact comes from the same phone number or email address.

Can I get a credit for a bad lead?

Google's help (checked Oct 2026) describes automatic credits for poor-quality, duplicate or invalid leads, usually within 30 days, and a feedback survey that "may" lead to a credit. Credits aren't guaranteed.
