The Missed-Call Fix

Jobber missed call text back: how to turn on SMS send back

Disclosure: we wrote and sell a guide on this.

If you're on Jobber, missed call text back lives inside Receptionist, and Jobber calls the setting SMS send back. If Receptionist and a Jobber dedicated phone number are already set up, it's a toggle you can switch on tonight. Here's what it does, what it costs, what it needs first, and how to test it.

What Jobber's SMS send back does

If a caller hangs up before Receptionist can start a conversation, SMS send back automatically texts them. Jobber sends it to new callers and existing clients who haven't had a text-back in the past 24 hours and haven't replied STOP.

Jobber AI Receptionist cost

Receptionist is included on Jobber's Plus plan; on select other plans it's a $29/month add-on with 30 conversations, then $0.79 per extra conversation (per Jobber's help, checked Oct 20, 2026; prices can change). Re-check before you buy. None of this is free, so check your plan before you count on it.

Jobber dedicated phone number: the prerequisite

Receptionist requires a Jobber dedicated phone number, even if you keep using your existing number. Only admins can set the dedicated number up, it isn't available during a trial, it can't be changed once selected, and it's available in the US, Canada and UK. Jobber's two-way text messaging also uses the dedicated phone number, so if you already text clients from Jobber, you may have one.

How to turn on SMS send back in Jobber

Per Jobber's help, the steps are: Receptionist in the side navigation, Manage, turn the SMS send back toggle on, then Edit to customize the message callers receive if they disconnect.

  1. Select Receptionist in the side navigation.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Find SMS send back and turn the toggle on.
  4. Select Edit and paste your message (below).

Jobber call forwarding: keep your existing number

You don't have to give customers a new number. Set your cell to forward only unanswered calls to your Jobber number ("no answer" forwarding, never "forward all"). Jobber's help says most carriers let you forward calls after a certain number of rings, and recommends turning off Jobber's 10-second answering delay if you use carrier call forwarding. Verizon's no-answer/busy forwarding code is 71 plus the 10-digit number. T-Mobile's forward-if-no-reply code is 611 plus the number and #. AT&T says call forwarding is changed from your wireless phone and points to its device tutorials.

What Receptionist does and doesn't do here

Receptionist does more than text back: it answers calls to your Jobber number with AI and can take messages, create requests and book jobs, depending on your settings. If you only want the text-back, SMS send back is the piece you need, but it still sits inside Receptionist and its billing. Before you turn it on, decide whether you want the AI answering your calls at all, and test it from a second phone.

New Jobber number? Registration first

A brand-new dedicated number has to clear carrier registration for business texting before SMS send back reaches anyone. Automatic texts start once carriers approve your registration. Quo reports most approvals within 24–48 hours, but some take up to 20 days or longer. In the meantime, a voicemail greeting that says "text us your address and the problem" costs nothing.

The message to paste under Edit

When you click Edit, paste template A1 from the guide's text pack and swap in your business name:

[Business]: sorry we missed your call, we're on a job. What's the problem and your address? We'll call you back shortly. Reply STOP to opt out.

Count it after the swap: about 160 characters or less, plain quotes, no emojis.

Test SMS send back from a second phone

From a phone that isn't saved as a client, call your number and hang up before Receptionist answers. Then check: - Did a text arrive, and does it start with your business name? - Call again the same day. You should not get a second text (the 24-hour rule above). - If you forward from your cell, does the caller's own number show up in Jobber?
