Can Google Voice text back missed calls?
Disclosure: we wrote and sell a guide on this.
Does Google Voice have auto text reply? Not according to Google's help pages. If you searched for Google Voice missed call text back, here's the short version: Google's help only covers alerts to you, like notifications and email. There's no auto-reply setting listed. If your business line is on Google Voice and you want missed callers to get a text, you'll need a different tool for that part. You don't have to give up your number to start.
Does Google Voice have auto reply for missed calls?
In Google Voice, missed-call settings are about telling you: notifications, and email alerts under Settings → Calls ("Get email alerts for missed calls"). None of these sends anything to the caller. If a homeowner calls while you're under a sink, they hear your voicemail, and that's it.
Before you build your week around a workaround you saw online, check Google's own help pages for the setting. As of October 20, 2026, we couldn't find one.
Google Voice auto reply text: why scripts are risky
Google's Voice Acceptable Use Policy says not to send messages via an automated process, such as a script, and says Google may limit or terminate access when it finds a violation. So a homemade auto-text add-on isn't a safe workaround for a business line.
What about a regular cell plan?
Same story. Standard Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile support pages cover call forwarding, not text-back (checked Oct 20, 2026). Forwarding is still useful, because it's how you get your unanswered calls to a tool that can text back while you keep answering the ones you can.
Google Voice for business texting: what can text back instead
None of these is free. Here's what each one needs, per the vendors' own help pages: - Housecall Pro: Missed Call Automation in Voice settings texts existing customers when you miss a call. Test it from a number that isn't in your customer list. - Jobber: SMS send back is part of Receptionist, which needs a Jobber dedicated phone number; Receptionist is included on the Plus plan or a $29/month add-on on select plans (per Jobber's help, checked Oct 20, 2026; prices can change). - ServiceTitan: A Missed Calls SMS campaign in Marketing Pro, which launches the next day at the earliest. - Quo (formerly OpenPhone): Missed-call auto-replies for business hours and after hours. With no-answer forwarding, it works alongside any cell.
If you're on Google Voice today: a simple path
- Pick one text-back tool. If you don't use field-service software, Quo is one standalone option the guide covers. Use only one tool. Two tools texting the same caller looks like spam.
- Decide what happens to your number. You can move your number to the new tool, or put the new number on your website and ads. Jobber's help explains how to link a Jobber dedicated number to Google Voice and forward calls to it, and recommends a 10-second answering delay for Google Voice users. Test it before you rely on it.
- Submit texting registration the same night. Your new tool sends automated texts, and carriers want those numbers registered first (A2P 10DLC). Automatic texts start once carriers approve your registration. Quo reports most approvals within 24–48 hours, but some take up to 20 days or longer.
- Cover the gap for free. Change your voicemail greeting to ask callers to text you their name, address and problem. Customers texting you isn't automated messaging, so it needs no registration, and it works on Google Voice too.
- Test it. Call from another phone, let it ring out, and confirm what the caller actually receives.
Once you've picked a tool: the wording
Google Voice can't send it, but whichever tool you move to will need a short message: business name first, one question about the job, and an opt-out. The free missed call text template page has one you can copy, with the length rules.
